Default Pickin or Pieken?

How do you pronounce it?

Personally, I pronounce it Pie-ken, but friends of mine on Vent pronounce it the other way. Just wondering the consensus of the board.

It's like Pike with an N on the end.

I would doubt anyone whose first language is English would pronounce it with a short I sound. It's one of the first rules you learn in English, the presence of an E after a single consonant lengthens the preceeding vowel. Like all rules involving language it's not always true, but I can't think of any exceptions at the moment.

Actually I just though of one, it doesn't work too well when the consonant is a W, like in vowel, bowel, towel, trowel... But that's it, I can't think of any more exceptions. Except for America. And operation. And iteration and profiterole.

OK, so the rule doesn't work too well if the consonant is a W, or at the very start of a word, or sometimes in the middle.

But Piken definitely has a long I sound. OK?

Can't be Pik-ken because you would have to write Pikken or Picken, not Piken.
Gotta be Pi-ken.

Let's look at:

hide -> hidden
wide -> widen

the first changed the pronunciation, thus an extra d. hi-de -> hid-den
the second didn't change: wi-de -> wi-den

Pie-kin is my vote.

Anyone else go through thinking that Tyria was Tie-REE-uh?

Then you hear Glint voicing over after one of those jungle missions something like... "the tide has turned for TEE-ree-uh." (Rhymes with Syria.)

Ehh, English sucks anyway. Too many inconsistencies... in spelling/pronounciation.

One example I like is laughter and slaughter.
